I asked ChatGPT to write my book for me...This is what happened
Are robots going to take my job?
By now, you’ve heard of ChatGPT, the chatbot powered by artificial intelligence, that’s helping companies automate writing job descriptions, college students cheat on essays and might just replace journalists forever.
Launched in November 2022 by Open AI, “ChatGPT is a natural language processing tool driven by AI technology that allows you to have human-like conversations and much more with a chatbot. The language model can answer questions, and assist you with tasks such as composing emails, essays, and code.”
"ChatGPT is scary good. We are not far from dangerously strong AI," said Elon Musk, one of the founders of OpenAI.
Since I’m not one to wait around for the robot apocalypse, I decided to see if ChatGPT was really my enemy. Could AI have written my book Fashion Killa: How Hip-Hop Revolutionized High Fashion? Imagine all of the months of research, interviews and writing (and rewriting) this would have saved. Before we proceed, this is merely for entertainment purposes. If my editor is reading this, I did not use ChatGPT to write any of my manuscript.
Using ChatGPT was easy enough. I logged in using my email and phone number. The platform is bare-bones. I asked the prompt to write an article on hip-hop and fashion and then hit enter.
Within seconds, this is what came out…
Hip-Hop and Luxury Fashion: A Match Made in Style Heaven
Hip-hop music has been a major influence in shaping popular culture and fashion since its inception in the 1970s. The genre's impact has been felt in everything from streetwear to high fashion, and nowhere is this more evident than in the relationship between hip-hop and luxury fashion. In recent years, the two have become increasingly intertwined, with hip-hop artists leading the charge in making luxury brands a staple in the world of hip-hop.
The roots of this connection can be traced back to the early days of hip-hop, when fashion was used as a way to express individuality and rebellion against the status quo. Back then, hip-hop artists like Run-DMC and LL Cool J were known for their distinctive style, including oversized glasses, gold chains, and Adidas sneakers. This trend continued throughout the 80s and 90s, with the likes of Notorious B.I.G. and Jay-Z sporting designer brands like Tommy Hilfiger, Gucci, and Versace.
However, it wasn't until the turn of the millennium that hip-hop and luxury fashion truly became intertwined. The rise of hip-hop moguls like Jay-Z and Diddy, who made millions through their music and entrepreneurial ventures, created a new breed of hip-hop artists who were not only successful, but also wealthy. This newfound wealth allowed them to indulge in the finer things in life, including luxury fashion.
One of the biggest turning points in the relationship between hip-hop and luxury fashion was the launch of Kanye West's Yeezy brand in 2015. The rapper and designer's collaboration with Adidas revolutionized the fashion industry, bringing streetwear and high fashion together in a way that had never been seen before. The success of the Yeezy brand was soon followed by other hip-hop artists, including Travis Scott and Drake, who launched their own fashion labels or collaborated with established luxury brands.
Today, hip-hop and luxury fashion have a symbiotic relationship, with each influencing the other. Hip-hop artists have become some of the biggest ambassadors for luxury brands, using their music and social media platforms to promote high-end fashion. Meanwhile, luxury brands have embraced hip-hop culture, incorporating elements of streetwear into their designs and collaborating with hip-hop artists to create limited-edition collections.
This trend is not just limited to the world of fashion, but has also been seen in the jewelry industry. From diamond-encrusted watches and bracelets to custom-made chains, hip-hop artists have become some of the biggest spenders on luxury jewelry. The relationship between hip-hop and luxury jewelry is such that it has even led to the creation of specialized jewelry designers catering to the hip-hop market.
In conclusion, hip-hop and luxury fashion have come a long way since the days of Run-DMC and LL Cool J. The two have become intertwined in a way that is shaping the fashion industry, with hip-hop artists leading the charge in making luxury brands a staple in the world of hip-hop. The relationship between the two continues to evolve and grow, and it will be exciting
Reading this, it’s clear that Elon Musk and I have very different definitions of “scary good.”
The article itself is mediocre. It’s barely better than copying and pasting from Wikipedia and lacks any insight. Where’s the style, the flair? With such a dynamic topic, you’d expect some description of actual clothing, artist quotes or at the very least, references to song lyrics. And who ends an article with “in conclusion”?!
It reads literally how I’d imagine a robot to write on the subject. Cold and heartless. For the record, ChatGPT admitted to having no emotions. So there’s that.
If a writer submitted this, there’s no way it would be published by any reputable outlet. I can’t even see my high school English teacher letting this one slide. This is more than a little nip and tuck; it requires a full face lift to be submitted. By that point, you might as well just write the whole thing yourself.
Of course, this is just the start. Artificial intelligence will undoubtedly grow and the machine learning strengthened. There will be CEOs looking to replace writers but inevitably, some humans will have to oversee (and edit) whatever comes out.
To my fellow creatives who are terrified right now that ChatGPT will take over our jobs, rest easy. As long as you are being paid for your expertise and elan, no robot can replace you. The challenge then, is to sharpen your skills, build a portfolio and harness your network.
You can be imitated but never duplicated.
