I’ve barely recovered from Kendrick Lamar’s nuclear diss “Euphoria” but the LA rapper decided to take page from Drake’s back-to-back playbook and released another song today. “6:16 in LA” is inspired by Drake’s series of time/location songs like “8am in Charlotte” and “4pm in Calabasas”.
In the song, Kendrick warns the Canadian rapper of the shady people closest to him and creates a web of mistrust about who’s leaking his personal info and who wants to see his downfall…There’s been a longstanding assumption that Drake’s camp has a lot of holes (See: How Pusha T sourced his dirt for “Song of Adidon”). According to Genius, the song is produced by Sounwave and Jack Antonoff, Taylor Swift’s longtime producer, which is a dig at Drake’s “Taylor Made Freestyle.”
The title deserves its own breakdown. So far, I’ve found SEVEN references ranging from hip-hop and pop culture to the Bible, which can be ahem used to describe Drake’s personal life.
June 16 is Tupac Shakur’s birthday
June 16 is Father's Day (You remember Kendrick calling out Drake for being a deadbeat father in “Euphoria”)
June 16 was start of The People vs. OJ Simpson (also a nod to the song’s artwork)
June 16 was the funeral of Nicole Brown Simpson
June 16 was the premiere of HBO’s Euphoria
Kendrick performed in Drake’s hometown on June 16, 2011.
And probably the most vicious, Corinthians 6:16: “Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body?” (I’ll leave that to your imagination).
I want to know who at Kendrick’s company has time to find all of these connections. That has to be a full time job.
What do you think of “6:16 in LA”? I’ll be hosting a rap reactions discussion on Twitter Spaces today at 1pm ET. Follow me at @SowmyaK and come through.
That really is crazy. We’re all wrapped up in this beef!
