Summer is over. I can’t believe it. Remember when summer meant ice cream, cut off shorts and three months of vacation? I barely did two out of three of those things. On the work front, I was deep in the Roc-A-Fella book trenches and launched my first YouTube channel. I’m happy to announce that I have been able to monetize my YouTube in under three months! So, I guess it was worth it. I still wish I ate more ice cream.
Anyways, earlier in the season, I posted the perennial music industry question that journalists and fans love to discuss and debate: What is the song of the summer? At that time, it was between Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” and Tommy Richman’s “Million Dollar Baby”.
The world today is not the world back then. Ben and Jen were still together. Deadpool and Wolverine did something. I have no idea. I don’t watch those movies. And who would have predicted that Kamala Harris would become the surprise Presidential nominee? And “Not Like Us” would be played at the Democratic National Convention? Seeing Governor Gavin Newsom and the California delegates over the searing Drake diss played was a strange and wonderful moment. Thank DJ Cassidy for that one.
Meanwhile, Charli XCX’s Brat took over pop and pop culture. I’m still not 100% sure how to use “brat” in a sentence. Is it a verb or noun? Apparently, Kamala Harris is brat. So she’s a contender for song of the summer with “Guess” (featuring Billie Eilish). And you can’t forget Sabrina Carpenter’s ear worm “Espresso”, with its summer-ready music video that makes me wish I was living la dolce vita instead of the life of a writer.
I can’t decide. So since the election is around the corner, let’s make this democratic and put it to a vote. You tell me! And if you choose “Something else”, let me know in in the comments!
I'd give a vote to Hind's Hall by Macklemore. After years of being written off after the whole Grammy fiasco (and as a bit of cornball generally), he came back with a hard-hitting song about the protests & Palestine, a topic no one wants to touch. As Tom Morello put it: '“Hind's Hall” is the most Rage Against The Machine song since Rage Against The Machine.'
